Hi There i really want some help- I have been offered a manager position from a Big 4 - I have been a consultant before with on of the large reputable consultancies but am just coming out of 4 years in industry. Salary from this offer is good, the company is excellent, people are nice but I am worried about the traveli have a small son and dont want to be away from home for ages- is there any way they will let me work within a 40 mile radius of london if i ask for this or will they tell me to go and jump?last time i worked for a consultancy, i was luck and didnt have to live away from home in 3 yearsdont know what to do- i can ask the question and if they say sorry you have to go where the clients and i turn the job down am i making a big mistake?

Now is the right time to raise the question. You are in a strong bargaining position because they want you.It is not an unreasonable question. Raise it as a concern rather than an ultimatum. Then the choice is yours based on how accommodating they have been.They are unlikely to promise 100% local but they may offer concessions e.g. it will be typically 50% London and 50% with 3 nights away. You can remind them of this later if it turns out different.

thanks for the advice - i will try this- i had already accepted the offer but iassume that shouldn't matter as they wouldnt want someone starting if they weren't happy?i would expect most work to be around london anywaymy other option is to go contracting - certainly a bit riskier but at least i can be a bit choosierwould just be great to get a Big 4 on the cv before going this route though...???
