Good god man... pick yourself up off the floor! There is hell of a lot more out there than the Big 5... especially Acc! ;) why not try a smaller firm where you might even get find yourself in a 'nicer' job with a more personalised approach and not part of a huge machine!

well said R....be a person not a number, make a difference rather than being a component...believe me you will get more out of it. i worked at acc for 6 years and felt very undervalued

I was desperate to join a big 5 consultancy. After university I applied to them all and was rejected. So I went off to get experience and an MBA. Applied again and was rejected - no blue chip experience. So I got some blue chip experience and applied again. Rejected again.A year later applied again. Many rejections but one of them actually offered me a position. At last I have achieved my dream.Trouble is I hate it. Half the time there is not enough work and you sit around on the bench writing powerpoint slides. The other half you are stuck in a hotel writing powerpoint slides.Such is the glamour of Business Transformation in a big brand consultancy.Count your blessings mate. Go for a smaller outfit either in consultancy or industry.

If you want financial security and benefits, then a career with a consultancy firm of any description is probably not for you. Even the big firms slash jobs and benefits when the markets turn. For financial security and benefits, join the civil service, or commercial/retail banking, or even one of the big 4 as an auditor.

Yes you are right about the civil service and banks providing security. But also, the obvious reasons i want to join consultancy is because I feel that they are great first steps in beginninng a career, provide great training in upto date skills, pay you pretty well for doing that stuff, expose you to many projects, allow you to meet experts in the IT field, gives you a challengeI've worked in the bank b4: and it was horrible pay for a challenging positionI'm working in government now: its good pay but not alot of challengeHence my preference to join a large firm which targets my degree in Management Information Systems.I know there are alot of people here who have gone through the firms and would say its crap or whatever...But can you really say that its that bad when it provides you with so much advantages? Especially if you are just coming out of school?

Sure, it;s not that bad. There are plenty of people who would give their right arm for a job like that. Equally, working for a big firm is not the be all or bug#er all of a consulting career. Beyond a certain threshold, even small/medium sized firms will offer just as good if not better pay and benefits as a big firm. Plenty of the most prestigious firms are not big, and indeed would not be able to sustain themselves in their existing form if they were that big - they'd have to take on a lot of non-core work and dilute their strengths, just as McKinsey did when it grew.
