Future?
27.09.6 00:00

Hi All,While most of the posts here talk about getting into consulting or working in consulting.......what is peoples views on life after consulting. Quite simply, the work in consulting is rewarding and you get to work on top level issues in the right job, which no doubt could set you up for the future. But what is the future?I am in the process of accepting an offer for a senior consultant position in the oil/gas industry and would like to work in consulting for 5-10yrs. Would i be in demand after this period of time to move back into a normal hours job? Obviously it depends on the work i do but do people get pigeon holed as consultants? Any views?

If you look at the structure of a typical consultancy, only 1/4 of those at the senior consultant level will go on to become a Partner at the firm. So by definition the majority at your level do go on to pursue a life outside consulting (yes there is such a thing as a world outside consulting ladies & gents!).The most common exit routes include:i) being "poached" by a client to take on a strategic or executive role inhouse. as this usually builds the bond between the consultancy and the client organisation, this is not something frowned on by consulting firms (and so the door would be open to return to them later)ii) going to work on a freelance consulting basis or as an interim. this usually pays twice as well for the number of days worked, which means you can achieve a better work/life balance if that's your gripe with consulting - or can earn a lot more than staying in consulting if you find you're not one of those being considered for the partner track.iii) being headhunted. my consulting friends are now in investment banking, FTSE 100 corporates and dot-coms. many ex-consultants are also being hired by private equity firms to help run the businesses that they are busy acquiring.iv) setting up a start-up. not for everyone, but a few years in consulting does give you the business knowledge and the bank balance to be able to take a risk on a venture - and stand a reasonable chance of making a success of it.Hope that helps. Hi Tony,Thanks for the feedback....much appreciated. I actually would enjoy the consulting lifestyle but i do have a feeling my missus one day wont ;-) In addition, i would like to move back into a management role in a oil major one day so i assume consulting with various oil companies can only be good for my career...hope i am right?

100% correct. Consulting basically gives you the opportunity to go and impress senior management in half a dozen Oil & Gas companies, so there's a far greater chance of you finding out about fast-track career openings that you're suited to and a good chance you'll really hit it of with one of your clients and be offered a position you wouldn't have even known about had you stayed employed with your existing employer. Tony, Thanks for your response above, as an associate it's much appreciated. I wondered if you can provide some advice around qualifications and experience required for a move to banking or VC work. I have friends on all sectors in the city and they all drone on about ACA qualifications as they key to securing roles after consulting in VC and IB spheres but the thought of debits and credits for three years as well as full time work isn't too appealing. In your experience, what have your friends and colleagues got and/or done to make these moves?PS. Was at the YMCA event on Monday and thoroughly enjoyed it. From a MCA promotion event and charity fundraiser I can only suggest to do them more often!Regards, Cons
