Hi I was thinking of doing a Phd in corporate strategy I'm 25 and I have just finnished my undergrad in marketing I'm looking to become a consultant. Would doing this improve my chances in this field? I have read other posts of Phd's struggling to find jobs and I was just looking to find out what everyone else thought. Thanks

I would say don't bother doing a PhD. Some of the most successful consultants I work with dont even have business/marketing/finance undergrad degrees or MBAs. Why don't you get a consulting job now, see if this is someting you really want to do, and then maybe consider doing an MBA in a couple of years? The market is very good for consultants at this point, so I'm sure you have a good shot.

If you want to do a PhD, then that's great. I hear they are a lot of fun and it could potentially be very interesting. But I wouldn't expect that it would improve your employability as a strategy consultant - unless you went aren't happy with your undergrad (e.g., second-tier uni) in which case there might be an advantage (but only if you then got your PhD from a top-tier uni), and even then the effect is too marginal to make it worth spending 4 years doing.In fact, many firms (except from possibly BCG/Mck) don't know how to deal with PhD's as they don't fit into their usual categories of Undergrad, MBA or experienced hire. That's probably why you are finding PhD students on this forum unsure about how to apply to consultancies.

A PHD is very useful in Germany and other parts of Europe. It is effectively the MBA over there and very well regarded. However in the Anglo Saxon world, the MBA has the mind share amongst recruiters.
