Hi, I'm interested in becoming a Technology Consultant in a FS practice.. My options are :PA in the IT Delivery Practice.PwC in IT Risk Assurance. In terms of future prospects which one would give me the best chance? I understand that PwC has a better "name". However, i'd be joining PwC in a Tech stream rather than a consultant stream, does this de-value it for a future consulting role? Also, I would not be studying for any of the qualifications at PwC that come standard with a most roles because, again, it's not a straight consulting role and therefore not required. However, I would hope to move into such a position after some time at PwC.On the other hand, I think that PA is much more aligned to what I want to do. However, I must confess to being a tad concerned over some "snobbery" towards PA as being outside of the big consultancies. I'd appreciate any opinions on this!Regards, Hig

I would question PA thoroughly on the clients and projects they have in FS if you want to stay FS aligned. The IT practice you have an offer from is cross industry so you are in danger of losing industry experience. An interesting conundrum though: Audit in your target industry, or consulting across sectors.

Stay away from anything audit/assurance IMO. Personal preference though.

+1 - I worked in audit for a year having been a consultant and it was not a great experience. Also people I met whilst I had worked in audit who wanted to get into consulting did an MBA to do so ..... I.E - if this is a long term career choice it's a career defining decision.Consultants often play many roles - business analyst, project manager, service delivery, IT strategy, PMO. Auditors within IT can come in few forms - IT general controls (systems audits), outsource auditors, data auditors. The roles here tend to have more structure but are also very theoretical in nature

IT risk assurance isn't consulting, and mostly isn't deep technology. It's IT audit and controls work, mainly with audit clients.PwC has a separate and rapidly growing tech consulting practice - now the largest part of its Uk consulting practice by headcount. However it is currently subject to a recruitment freeze due to being part of the wider consulting business.
