Regarding project management experience in an IT company, I would do some due diligence against your expectations of project management. I have often seen what I would term 'technical project management' from IT companies, which means focusing on deliverables and time and budget. All good stuff and essential, but little focus on developing a project charter, forming and leading the team, communications planning and management, change management, 'real' governance and risk management that is broader than technical risk. I'm certain that statistically there are some PMs who work for IT companies who do these things as well, I just haven't seen them ;¬)
