Dear All,I am at a crossroads (34 years old) and would like people’s opinions on my chances of entering the IT consulting arena. I am finding IT at my current employer increasingly restrictive and would like to “break in to” consulting in order to secure more interesting work. OK, my background is as follows: 16 years experience within IT which includes 4 years IT Management experience. From a people management perspective I have led small teams and managed budgets etc. I have also used PRINCE2, ITIL and other frameworks. I have an MBA (unfortunately not from a top university) and a technologically focused MSc. Can any of the recruiters or IT focused consultants offer any advice or information on contacts?Thanks in advance,TC.

34 years old is, as you may have sensed, is an older-than-average age to enter consulting. However, your experience is an asset. 16 years in industry using formal frameworks and methodologies lends you client-credibility and marketability.I would suggest as a next step you sell yourself as a specialist in a single, deep area. Are you an ITIL Service Manager? Or are you a PRINCE2 project manager? Or are you something else altogether?The big IT consultancies have a need for all these specialist roles, and you should contact them - but only with a clear view of where your experience could best be used.

I became a consultant for the first time at the age of 38. Most Systems Integration / consultancy outfits are short of good IT project managers and architects. If that is your area suggest you contact the likes of LogicaCMG or Capgemini. I have worked for both and there is plenty of grey (ish) hair about.

John / Old Timer,Thanks for the positive feedback. At the moment I am an IT Manager (generalist) but have managed several large projects including implementing ITIL. I guess I need to specialise in either project management or service delivery. Would any of the consultancies help with that transition, or am I better securing an industry role in one of those areas first?Thanks again,TC.
