Hi!I am french, studied in Germany, and will get my PhD soon. I would like then to go back to France and start a career in consulting.I was told that consulting in France is very sensitive to the "grandes ecoles" issue: they would only look at your CV if you come from one of those (Centrale, Mines, ...).Does anyone have experience with this?ThanksStephanie

The 'grandes ecoles' issue is a sensitive issue if you want to be a consultant in France, so you are wise to consider it, but a few years ago it was considered 'souhait' not 'obligatoire'.Attention: this is part of a more general issue regarding France, employment and the global economy. My advice is that although you most probably feel that you should not have to be 'diplomatique' when you are in your home country, you should appreciate that all places change to some extent if you have been away.But, overall there will be French business people that are very pleased to welcome you back. Take the time to make sure that they are French consultants, if that is your preference. Do some more research first if necessary, even it feels painful after a PhD!

Thanks. What exactly do you mean by French consultants? French companies, or french citizens?I would actually rather work for an international firm, but in a french office to start, in order not to be hindered by the language as long as I dont master the business side. Then, I would consider moving again.

Consultants legally employed in ‘La France’! French companies and citizens are very important considerations with this, but focus on what you can give to them in terms of your skills. If they also have a German office(s) then your German language skills would also offer them extra value. Obviously research your 'raison d'être' at a specific consultancy before applying or attending interviews. Even if you do not want to master the business side through qualification, and your preference is for very client facing consultancy, then consider why employing you would be good for their business. Help them to answer this question. For example apply to firms where your PhD knowledge is relevant to their client work if you can.
