How long do you think it is possible to continue as a generalist in consulting before you have to specialise?Since graduating a few years ago I have been working on projects across sectors and business lines. That has worked really well for me as a junior consultant, but looking to the future I keep getting approached by agencies who are offering me more senior, but more specialised, roles.I know that a lot of the bigger firms have matrix structures and look to stick people in specialised positions to suit, but are there any firms that are more flexible than others in letting you work on diverse projects?Someone has suggested that change management is the best place to be for preserving this variety - do you think this the solution?Or am I just trying to both have my cake and eat it? :-)

*I believe* [perhaps a consultant can see if it's true] that technology specialisation gives you good generalization on the industry dimension of the matrix.Eg - in McKinsey they have one BTO, which is a virtual office at all locations. In Accenture they call it "Global Technology" - where global implies across all industries. You'd have to check up on this though, as I have no first hand experience - just a job description which implies the above.
