Hi Had an interview with a mgt consulting firm. Overall experience was good and rang HR to thank them etc.... Person from HR said that she will provide feed back shortly, is this short for saying "im sorry you didnt get the job" your thoughts please. thanks

Not necessarily! 99% of the positions are NOT offered on the spot (immediately after an interview). They may have other candidates that they want to interview before making a decision. Contacting references might be another reason. On average it takes 1-2 weeks.Godd Luck.

Phoning HR or sending a thank you note is something that went out years ago. They will contact you when or if they want to take you forward. If you don't hear anything after two weeks, then call them but otherwise its a bit of a waste of time. Some consultancies, notably E&Y BAS, are appallingly bad at getting back to candidates despite promising to feedback within the day.

It could still go either way - it sometimes takes me a few days for the recruiters to talk to everyone who met with a candidate to get their opinions. But can I just say that I LOVE it when people send me a thank you card or email! Old fashioned? Maybe... But still a nice gesture.
