Need advice

Hi,I'm looking to enter the Consultancy arena, but have no previous experince of this sector. I've 5yrs industry experience, being trained on a Grad scheme for a large blue chip. I then left the blue chip to join a 'smaller' organistion in a different organisation sector and worked as a Account Manager/Project Manager.I've just received an offer from IBM BC to join their ERP implementation team (as this is what I used to do).But I have also received an offer from KPMG to enter a IT Project advisory role.My main aim is to move into the management consultancy arena and to work with organisations at a more strategic level, but I recognise I need more experience.Which of these organisation has a better name and reputation for looking after and training its employees?

Had the same KPMG vs IBM BC (then of course, PwC) choice in 1999, both for ERP roles. Had similar experience to you. Chose KPMG - stayed 5 years and am still in consulting. My impression is that there is little choice between the firms so choose the best role for you. Like you, I wanted to do more strategic work. It took me a long time to move away from ERP because I was very chargeable despite trying to for a long time. ERP v IT project advisory? I would think the latter is more likely to lead to management consulting (if that is what you still want to do with a couple of years experience). The trouble with ERP is if you are good, you will get caught in a pseudo-techie trap where you can get out because you generate good fees. Good luck with your decision!

Tricky,Thanks for your advice - really appreciated it.My ideal role would be to like 'Gerry Robinson in I'll show them who's boss' but I appreciate I need many more years of experience in a wide range of industries and roles.I get the impression that if I join IBM - I will just end up being an ERP person. What are KPMG like with training and personal development?

The chances are if you join either company you'll do ERP. Remember consultancies are project driven they obviously need ERP experts and so they've offered you a position.. So if your really keen on strategy the best route is to approach strategy houses they often take experienced hires as Associates and you'll get real strategy work to build up the experience. However, they have high standards w.r.t academics etc.. so if your not in the top there it is not so easy..Also there is an excellent case study on KPMG by Colin Sharman their ex VP.. in a book called Corporate Strategy, don't know author, it illuminates the culture there and it is a political place so if your into that its the right place. Good luck whatever you decide.
