Depends what it is, really. Firstly, there's no shame in redundancy these days. If somebody says they were made redundant and spent the last 6 months trying to get a job, then I for one think absolutely nothing of it. However, if somebody takes a break then I would want to know what they've been doing with that time. If it's volunteer work of some sort, then fine. If it's getting over a nervous breakdown, then fine. If it's bumming around at home, then that's fine too. But if they put down that they have "been travelling" and dress it up like it were some sort of pretentious Phileas Fogg adventure around the world, and I interpret that as having been "a long holiday", then it's dust. Similar to how I immediately put in the can any CVs I see from graduates who have spent a year "travelling". We all know what that means - bumming off of mum and dad so they can go on an extended holiday, no sense of guilt or responsibility, no work ethic, and they think other people are idiots enough to believe them when they say it was some sort of cultural experience (yeah right, and so was my week in benidorm). So - I think you'll be fine. Just be honest in describing what you have been doing!
