"I am somewhere between the starting point of my journey and the end destination. How long do I have left to walk?"That's a question to ask HR. You could be joining at the bottom of the grade, could be at the top, could be in the middle.....

If I was to guess I would say I am joining at the middle of the grade. My recruitment consultant tells me 2 years but that sounds a bit optimistic to me.Anyone from Deloitte care to share their own timelines?

2 or 3 years average. Possible to do it in 1, but depends on lots of things. Of the things you have less control over - it's mainly your first project and background/experience and personal style that will determine it.Plan for 2 full performance years (June to May).

Thanks, that's helpful Anonosaurous Out of curiosity, any tips asides from just trying to work hard etc. I'll give a brief profile Based in the uk. I'm going in for a SC role as a 29yo with about 4.5 years of post grad experience (albeit none specifically in consulting, my background is corporate banking & Strategic Change Management)I rejected an offer from Accenture previously as they offered me a package that was quite a way below my expectations. I also have an offer on the table from a bank I previously worked with and been promised quick promotions and a bright future etc etc however I'm inclined to go into consulting and have been told Deloitte is a good place to go and develop a career...Decisions Decisions.........

Banks promote faster than MC, but the promotions are more incremental. Also you would be doing much same as, offering limited development opportunities. That said Deloitte (as often cited on here) hire for grade below, so for an SC offer you'll need to be a Manager elsewhere. For banking I would say Deloitte not my first thought - methinks this is curiosity taking you down blind alleys. And Accenture aren't generally poor payers, so they may be giving you an early benchmark on where consulting firms will want to layer you.

I always thought that was the only good thing about them! Must change as you climb the ladder, at junior levels they pay more generously than their competitors (big 4/cap/ibm) from what I've heard.

Yep - I agree. If you're joining in the middle of the grade, then probably 2 full cycles (unless, of course, the recruitment specifically tell you that you will be considered in the next promotion cycle). That said, Deloitte do do off-cycle promotions also (albeit rare, but do tend to be for those who have been hired below grade).Surprised that Deloitte offer more than ACN though?

I can almost guarantee you won't get an off cycle promotion from SC to Manager, at best you could do it in a year but this would be very difficult as you're going to spend your first 12 months bedding in and building up your network - you would need to do something exceptionalIt would be completely achievable to do it in 2 years, however, providing you joined around this time of the year (gives you two full performance years - Sept through to May)What have they offered you salary-wise?

Ratjones, As I mentioned, there are variables you have less control over such as your first project, personality, how similar the role is to your previous experience. Assuming your first project is high-profile and gives you a decent opportunity to demonstrate manager skills (people management, client exposure, delivering core competencies for your part of the business) then you should focus on - Building a strong network partners and directors, make sure they know what you're doing. If you're on a high profile project this should be easy.- Delivering a strong piece of practice/business development. Get in early with this and take a lead on a proposition, social committee, account team...Bear in mind, with 4.5 years experience you'd be doing well to come in as SC. Most people at Manager grade have upwards of 6 years experience. You should expect 2 years at SC as your recruiter and others have said.

Thanks for the useful insight everyone! It is much appreciated from people in the industryI interviewed with ACN in January. They offer £48k + 2sign on - I turned it down as I was (and still am until I move - contracting at £475 per day but it's something I want to leave behind due to stability and a narrowing market for contractors etc)abc123 - Not got the formal offer in yet but consultant is pushing for £55k as well the £5k of flex benefits on top and she will try to get me a sign on bonus on top.The Banking offer is in the same region however it will involve going back to do a role I did 16 months ago so would probably kill my CV if I wanted to move on to a different firm.Deloitte is interesting as from what I've gathered it seems to be a good place to start a consulting career and seems to be the most favorable of the big 4.
