Does internal consultancy have a stigma attached?

I was Big 4 strategy consulting from graduation, and after healthy progression to Director and then a couple of years of frustratingly not progressing to Partner, I jumped ship to set-up an internal consultancy in a FTSE-250. It's been a year and I am absolutely loving it; no performance laddering, less politics, a focus on substance over format, far less air miles, minimal weekend working, and a bright career path (hopefully!).The reason for the post is that I have been trying to recruit ex-Big 4 SCs and Managers, but haven't really received the quantity and quality of CVs that I was expecting. My question is: Is there really that much of a stigma attached to internal consultancy?Thoughts welcome....

No stigma attached per se, but MCs making the move to an internal consulting team will look closely at the credentials of those already in the team much more so than the brand of the organisation in which the internal role sits. It's the inverse of consulting to consulting recruiting really. As for lack of quality - well that will be down to the channels you've used not the fact you are recruiting for internal consultancy. The very things which are making you happy there are the very things which wont be communicated or trusted through certain channels - especially direct. As you'll know yourself, getting to SC and Manager hires take a strong level of interruption in their working life. This is why I get retained :)

I don't want to subvert the recruitment process. We have an advert on TopConsultant already (http://www.top-consultant.com/job/business-transformation-manager_116005.php?SearchType=1&Country=UK), so do feel free to apply. I am looking for people at a range of different levels, so don't be put off if the description doesn't completely fit.

It might be the job title that's putting people off. "Business Transformation Manager"? - Would you want to be the guy whose job title suggests that you are responsible for managing a transformation of the business? Sounds like a ball-buster role. Responsible for doing the job of the CEO but paid the salary of a regular pleb and positioned down towards the bottom of the management food chain (reporting into the "Head of Business Improvement" who sounds like he might have quite a lot on his plate too, and as we all know doo-doo tends to trickle downhill). No wonder people aren't queueing up around the block to take on this seemingly vast chunk of responsibility?I'm sure it's actually a great job - the things you have said indicate that actually it's a brilliant role - but job titles like that are a little bit frightening, don't you think?

Not sure I agree with you BEP.I'd say it's the kind of title many people wanting a move to industry would be looking for. The role sounds decent enough. I'd suggest the main problem is the industry and the location. Neither are particularly attractive to people in their mid to late 20s based in London. I know that the business has a large number of operations and contracts around the country and so suspect there's probably also likely to be lots of UK travel. If I was particularly scrutinising the ad then I'd also say that the mention of lean turns me off. It makes me feel its being used wrongly as a replacement for process mapping and that the role is vague and unclear. Also it might be nice to include a bit more about the team the role sits.Just my opinion, and on the whole I think it looks like a good role and I'm surprised you're not getting more interest. Location the main thing for me. Perhaps mention whether its commutable from London or other flexible working arrangements?

- SefinnieI would be very interested in taking a private chat with you as I share a mutual interest with you regarding this particular role. My business model is built around being a "Disruptive recruitment company" - having a completely new spin on recruitment. What would be the best way to contact you and arrange a call?? SenorMick makes a good point also...

Thanks all. I really appreciate the insights, especially around the location and the job title. After years of reading this forum whilst on some truly appalling consulting gigs, it's great to post something and get a useful response...
