Hi Friends,I have a Manager grade offer from PwC's EDM Information Management & an Assistant Manager grade offer from Deloitte's Corporate Finance Forensics. Salary & grade wise, PwC beats Deloitte hands down ( PwC's base salary is 10% more & flexible benefit is £5.1k vs only £600 from Deloitte), but, I'd like to know more about the work side. Can you please throw some light on which one has a better scope from a 5-7 years future perspective? I've been told that I'll get promoted to Manager grade in Deloitte within 12 months which will mean the salary will be comparable to PwC. Moreover, I haven't worked with any of the Big 4s earlier, so, any thoughts on both the companies' work culture will be welcome. Thanks in advance!

Go with the PwC offer.Deloitte has been busily transforming itself into a firm more akin to Accenture than the Big 4, so look at their Forensics stuff as being more like Autonomy inside HP than the likes of the FTI etc which is where PwC would align you. And why work an extra year to get the same level PwC have already offered you - typical Deloitte nonsense. PwC also has a less aggressive culture (not saying Deloitte's is excessive though but definitely moving in a different direction). Going in at Manager grade I doubt you will still be in either firm 7 years down the line (you shouldn't be anyway) but PwC will give you better exits - in this instance.

Thanks Marsday for your prompt response. I too was thinking on the same lines that after 12 months, I might get a hike in PwC & my salary will be anyway be more than Deloitte's. I was also thinking on the lines of work involved and exposure in both the companies. I don't have experience in Forensics so wasn't sure myself however, it seemed an interesting niche so had applied. If we compare the work between the two companies, do you reckon PwC's exposure will be much better than Deloitte's ?

I agree with Mar's comments.Don't even consider the 'we can fast track you to Manager in 12 months' line. Unless it's written into your contract, it's just a line to make you feel better about being low-balled.

Thanks guys ! I have another offer from an end client (Insurance) for £55k but I've been advised by someone not to go in for an end client at this stage. I have 8.5 years experience. What do you suggest ?I think I'll go for PwC among the 3 offers I have, but, please let me know your thoughts.

I've been with IBM for 7 years and with a smaller consultancy (Infosys) for 1.5 years. I was predominantly involved with managing Financial Services client deliveries across data centric projects.

I'm curious as to why you've been advised against going for end client? Have all your 8.5 yrs experience been within insurance and you fancy a change?I think you need to be really clear to yourself about why you want to go into consulting vs. industry/end client. Only then will you be able to decide which is for you.If it's between the PwC and Deloitte offers you mentioned, I'd personally for for PwC for the experience, entry into consulting, title, culture and exit options. Plus the bigger salary package.

With credible consultancy experience under your belt a move into industry would usually make complete sense now...although that offer in insurance seems a little on the low side (perhaps the total package and reduced travel compensate?). My slight reservation would be that the role would actually just be to dump you into some poorly defined S2 project. It's a reservation because most of the heavy lifting on S2 has been done, what remains is being constantly rewritten and there is a real sense of confusion about what remains to be done at all, and that market has been heavily contractor driven with the resulting date in the diary when the demand will start to dry up. And at 55K base, not a lot of hay for all that sunshine either. If it's a multiline insurer then so much the better, but a monoline will be a bit of a cul de sac when you look to move out. But you know this anyway. My instincts still point me to PwC. IBM is a strong firm in this area (I'm thinking their compact and bijou BAO service line) but PwC has the heritage and the all important alumni networks which will give you the options in 4 - 5 years time when you exit as a slightly frustrated, but heavily connected, SM.

I have 8 years experience in Financial Services (4 years Banking + 4 years Insurance) & 6 months in Telecom. The insurance company is Liverpool Victoria (LV) and the role is of a Business Analyst. The base is £55k + Upto 14% pensions + 30 days holidays + Upto 30% bonus. What do you think about this offer compared against PwC ? PwC is offering me £50k + £5.1k flex which is at par with the LV offer salary wise

Hi Friends,Can you throw some light on this End-client (LV Insurance) offer as against the PwC offer please? I know that LV is growing at the moment and has a number of key projects lined up for the next 5 years or so which I think should be good for me. However, please let me know your suggestions as I might not have the right details as I've been told all of this by LV itself, the agency & by some research I did on the web.

Amazing. It used to be the case that the consultants earned more than their clients. Look how things have changed.

Just a bubble rising in insurance Bushy, not symptomatic of insurance outpacing consulting pay more broadly..

Phew, glad to hear that. I've always considered insurance to be a bit of a sham industry so I'm glad to hear that it doesn't normally pay as much as consultancy.
