What are some of the typical problems an experienced hire can face at Deloitte? Considering joining the firm.

Are you an experiences hire from another consultancy or coming from business? That will make a big difference to the potential problems. In particular, those coming from business always just take some time to get used to consultancy - even if they think it is very similar to what they did while within a company. It isn't and many struggle for the first 6 months accordingly. That isn't specific to Deloitte tho

When I went from industry into MC, the main thing was finding out just how much more attractive my female colleagues were. Very troubling! You will find it very difficult to concentrate on work.

From the industry. What can one do to prepare for it?

I don't think there is anything you can do to prepare for it. You have to change the way you work, your mindset, the transient nature of the work and the people you work with and for. The most challenging element for me was dealing with the levels of ambiguity which no doubt you will experience (depending on what kind of background and industry you come from). If you are asking is there a way to avoid a time period of adjustment? Then the answer is no.

How does this impact your review and credibility as you adjust and cope?

Well, one would expect the firm to understand that you haven't done consulting work previously and give you some consideration for that as part of the review process. In reality, it is a steep learning curve and very much depends on what the culture is like in terms of support, etc. Maybe someone can give an insight from working at D?

From my own experience I would say that there is little allowance. You are expected to "get it" in fairly short order and need to ensure your adjustment period is quite short. But it is a big firm and difficult to generalise. Hope you end up with a decent partner and counsellor!

Hi,Prior to joining I'd make sure your life is in good order so you're not too distracted at work. There was a thread on here a long while ago about 'making a good impression' that's probably worth a read. http://forum.top-consultant.com/UK/74894/3/Advice-For-Making-Good-Impression/There are a few things you can do when you arrive to help accelerate your learning too.It does depend on your grade - but I'd suggest asking people around you to review your first few pieces of work (which will presumably be a slide or two) to check the it fits the style and expectations of the person you're working for. There's no need to go overboard or go too senior with this by the way. Maybe ask a peer/buddy not related to the work or someone more junior who has come through the grad scheme to take an informal look before you submit it to the boss. You don't want to expose yourself with something as simple as slide design and this step should help with that whilst you pick it up.I'm guessing you won't have responsibility for selling in your potential new role but if you do then it's worth noting that different parts of Deloitte sell in different ways. It's worth getting round your peers for a cup of coffee to understand the specific approach of your area. Best of luck
