Hi,I am studying in Denmark, but would like to hear your view as I believe it will be applicable in Denmark as well. While I know it is unlikely for applicants to do so, I would still like to hear if any of you have experience with applicants coming straight from university to the second level in a top management consulting company? (Skipping the level of Junior-Analyst or Associate) The reason I ask is that I have heard of a few such experiences, but they have all had scarce information concerning the applicant's CV.While some applicants for the graduate admissions have had a internship or relevant part-time job, few have had more than that. If I focus and work hard I may be able to have secured both an internships and two quite high ranked part-time jobs, which would therefore make me have some additional skills in data analysis, client interactions and synthesis.Even though a job as an associate would be very welcome, it is always good to be prepared for other opportunities. I would therefore like to know if it is even possible. Furthermore, a friend of mine is in a similar situation and I would like to know whether I should recommend him to push the companies slightly for this option.Best regards,Bjarke

Can't say I have EVER heard of this happening before! The stink it would create with the other new joiners - and with the consultants who've been with the firm a couple of years and suddenly find themselves alongside a newbie. I guess someone somewhere will have pulled this off at some point - but a realistic outcome to aspire to... No... and I think you could seriously harm your chances with a company if you bring this up. More realistic - and quite commonplace - is that if you're more qualified / talented than the other new hires you can push for promotion and a raise sooner than the other new joiners. This variability is more commonplace. But actually starting at a higher rank, no I can't see that.Hope this helpsTony

Hi Tony,Thanks for your view - I can definitely see the issue.Following your advice I will of course not bring this up.I just wonder.. In Denmark we have some student jobs within the consulting industry, where you take on many of the same tasks as the associates. Although a student will do tasks at a slightly lower level and of course for less hours per week, being in such a position for 2½-3 years must really make you able to do many of the same tasks that associates learn within the first year. As a substantial amount of associates are promoted (as far as I've heard) within 1½ years of their start, some student workers should be almost ready for promotion to consultant when graduating. Do you think they would then be promoted quite fast after they started as associates (1 year)? Or would they be kept as associates as long as other newcomers in order to not cause too much trouble?Thoughts on the subject would be very appreciated.(I've attached a job notice for a student worker position at BCG):Best regards,Bjarke[quote] We are looking for a bright mind to fill a position as student worker (20 hours per week) as soon as possible. If you recognize yourself in the following, we would like to hear from you.You are keen to join the best team in town and have good communication skills in both Danish and English. Why are job adverts so often written in the following form:"You are keen to join the best team in town and have good communication skills in both Danish and English. You have solid skills within excel modeling and complex analysis with attention to detail. You are proactive and work independently. You will build client relationships, why a professional approach towards our clients is key. Knowledge of statistics is an advantage. You are a third year bachelor student or on your first year of the master."As in "you are this", "you are that". They have no idea who the reader is, so their statements are likely to be incorrect. Shouldn't it be "we require somebody who... abc, xyz, etc"
