as this forum is not shy with opinions, the deafening silence probably tells you something about LBCS' profile....

As I thought! I did hope that someone had something good to say but obviously not :-)I hear that business consulting is relatively a new word in Logica and wanted to know if it is an upcoming practice.

I have also had contact from them. I saw an advert last time I was looking to move jobs (this time last year) but I think it was quite a aspirational advert with no real substance behind it i.e. gather CV's. However now there is a new Innovation and Cloud Consulting division launched January 1st 2011 .... hence the dearth of any real knowledge. Apparently Logica are holding roadshows at recruitment agency offices where they present what the newly formed consulting division does followed by a one hour interview. I have been in a similar consultancy before and found the buy in from the business really wasn't what is should have been but never know Logica are hiring so seem serious about driving it forward.

it'll be the same tired old horse that all the tech shops (capgemini, wipro, infosys etc etc) have been flogging - ie 'we are leaving money on the table at our clients, let's go after it' trouble is, they don't have the brand, credibility or relationships at existing clients, let alone new ones, to get that consulting business, and typically don't trouble themselves too much to come up with a differentiating value proposition. results - a new business within the group that is subsidised for a few years to get on its feet, and never quite does..

If you are a competent technologist who for some unknown reason is embarrassed to admit you like IT and would prefer to refer to it as "business" consulting while continuing to do techy things AND you have always had a hankering to work in the private sector, but for a company run with all the bureaucracy and speed of the civil service, then I would have no hesitation in recommending Logica....actually even that is not quite true - I would have reservations even then. I joined them some years back and lasted less than a year. They were the biggest cheapskates around. Took the top recent recruits (we were all division directors or lead salesmen) to an induction/networking event. We all arrived at a swish country manor only to find that in the evenings we were to be bussed half way across south London to a Travelodge where we were served food so awful half of us went a got a takeaway. In twenty years it is the only time I have dreaded going to work in the morning.Really good techy people and good strong BA's, but the "consulting" people were losers who could not cut it in a proper firm and the salesmen were all ex-software package pushers who would sell the gran for a quid.

I would mostly have to agree with Regular above. Not a particularly generous employer who is really an IT company with aspirations to become a business consultancy. They tend to pay below market rate and treat their consultants pretty badly overall with rubbish travle and expense policies and poor internal networking opportunities. There are however some good people at Logica who do know there stuff in Business Consulting but from what I hear many are looking with renewed interest on the job market as Logica have just finished an internal realignment programme which has left many without any clarity for the future. There's an awful lot of ex-BT senior management there which depending upon your experience is either good or tragically bad but they do bring some reasonable contacts with them.Logica will always be in my mind a top notch SI company but no more than that and their re-organisation to move into Cloud etc. seem to underline that. To make this into a decent business consulting brand would be a challenge but if you fancy that and can negotiate yourself a good package then it would be a good time to join.

Logicman - have you had your interview yet?I hope I'm not too late, but to answer a few of your questions:1. Market rates, but year on year payrise is not amazing. If you're on the bonus package this somewhat makes up for it.2. They have a career framework that maps out the career levels based on key capabilities. In practise there is no rigid promotion path or timescales. The best way to move up is by being chummy with your assignment Line Manager and your Staff Manager as these are the people who will sing your praises during the performance/pay review period. So if you're good at establishing and maintaining great relationships then you'll do well.3. Fairly relaxed - it's the sort of company where you can sit back and chill, or be really ambitious, it's what you make of it. Your experience will vary depending on where / which project(s) you work on, but generally people are hardworking and very friendly. There are a lot of egos in the company (ancient dinosaurs in high positions adding little value), most of which have been given the boot in a recent realignment programme (aka culling). They have a Social Club that offers discounts (up to 50%) on things like theatre tickets, sailing trips, wine tasting events and other events.4. Large proportion of public sector, government and defence work. Payment systems and smart metering are big ones.5. Pretty much what R2D2 said. I think Logica's problem is that despite rebranding and realignment, clients still aren't certain what they do and what they are driving towards. Company visions are woolly and lacking in substance with impact. With this in mind, now is a great time to join as you can be the driving force of transforming the BC practice. I know this is a long post but hope it helps!!

Thanks for all the good advice.Interview was pretty basic, a case study and 1-2-1 CV screening session.Relaxed environment however they were over an hour late - waiting around for an interview is not always the best thing and first impressions stick! The guys interviewing seemed pretty relaxed and had a good idea as to where they want business consulting to go - however there is still alot of ambiguity and uncertainty in my opinion. That however is sometimes not a bad thing and if you're looking for a blank canvass to work with then Logica are ideal. I agree with snap that there is scope to do well there and move up quickly if you're upto the challenge. The problem I have is that trying to build client relationships and trust as a business consulting partner is difficult and will take a number of years - and that's generous. They are a good SI and Technology company and maybe one day they will be a lead player in business consulting.Good luck to them :-)
