When you have an interview coming up and you may have to take the train for several hours or fly out to meet at the company's site - would you expect them to pay for your transport costs or not? Secondly, what's the norm - do they or do you fund the transportation (after all, it could be several hundred pounds if there are more rounds of interviewing)?

Good question. Some companies may pay for some or all of the expense, others will expect you to. I don't think there is a general rule, but it's open to negotiation. You could always request a phone interview as a starting point. This will at least rule out any obvious concerns from both parties before there is any cost involved.Good luck!Jimmiewww.itbodies.co.ukOnline IT Department Resource

With larger firms this generally is addressed up front - the recruiter tells you how to get there, what costs they cover (usually cheapest flight or train/car if the distance isn't too large) and how you should book (often they advise you to call their travel agent). If this is not addressed with the interview invitation, simply ask for it beforehand. Nobody likes surprises, on either side.Personally, I wouldn't interview with a company that is not willing to pay for the logistics/accomodation, but I don't expect big perks there - and I also wouldn't seek to change a face-to-face interview into a telephone interview, but that's just personal preference for looking people in the eye and having more ability to control the situation (body language, etc.).RegardsFloriankillerconsultant.com

Our policy is a bit sketchy but is something like this:If the candidate will be BASED out of the office he or she is interveiwing at, then we won't pay travel or accomodation UNLESS we are giving them relo.If they are coming down to london but will be based from home (more than a 'reasonable' commutable distance ie 50miles) or at one of our many regional sites, then we MIGHT pay for their travel. In every instance, we book the travel centrally and we don't always go cheapest. If we can get a super saver deal two weeks up front and get them first class, we will. If its at director level or above, we pay all travel costs and get driven from the main london terminal they come in to (heathrow, kings cross, euston etc...)BUT we do pay ALL grad expenses. Cos we're nice like that.
