I am looking to work in strategy consulting - in Ireland, for family reasons. I notice that of the MBBB firms, the ones with offices there are McKinsey and Booz. Does anyone have any information on- the type of work McK and Booz do in Ireland?- how large their Dublin office is and whether they are hiring?- any plans for the two other Bs, i.e. Bain and BCG, to open an office in Dublin?- what other well respected strategy consulting firms there are in Dublin? Thanks in advance for your help/answers

i was at Booz in london a couple of years ago and never heard anything about the dublin office (didn't know it existed). It's probably very small and not really great for career progression. You are much better off joining MBBB in london.

Thanks WH, I know I'd be better off joining MBBB in London, however that's not an option. Is there anyone else that can offer any insight into strategy consulting in Ireland, particularly within the MBBB world?

Hold on a minute - you worked for Booz and go on to say that the Dublin office is "probably very small". I just can't imagine what work Booz could possibly be doing out of Dublin. For a company that sends people from London to work in Saudi and people in Australia to work in the USA, I just can't understand why they would bother having a Dublin base given that the UK is already covered by London and all the other large Western European offices. It must be a tiny office. Is there even more than 1 single person in this "office"? To have a Dublin office reminds me of Trotter's Independent Traders - "London, New York, Peckham" (or whatever it was).Any thoughts on this guys? Unless there's loads of EU work going on in Dublin, I just can't see MBBB doing anything over there whatsoever - the economy just isn't big enough to justify a presence, surely?

I have no idea either why Booz have an office there, but it's listed on their site.Back to the original question, slightly rephrased: if I want to work as a strategy consultant for an MBBB company, it seems that my only option is McK there. Does anyone have any information on the type of work they do? How many people are based there? Are they hiring?

Looks like they're so small that nobody reads this board. Give them a call?

The McK office in Dublin is only an admin office with a "hot desk" for McK consultants coming to work to Ireland on a temporary basis. They do not have an office in Dublin per se, and therefore you cannot apply or work in this so-called office. You cannot work in MBBB in Ireland. In case you wonder, there is very little strategy consulting work in Ireland and the only exposure you could get would be in the likes of Deloitte and Accenture. But yet again, when Irish companies need strategy consultants they tend to fly them over from London.

I understand the preference to be based in Ireland. However when you sign up to work for a firm like MBB, you may not see the inside of your home office for months or even years at a timeYou will be required to work at client site 80-100% of the time, and the truth is that very few (if any) of MBB's clients will be based in Ireland. You will likely spend your time commuting to/from London and other European cities at a moments notice anywayI think the question is - If I do not want to leave Ireland, do I really want to work for a MBB company?

Yeah, I can confirm this. Join Booz in Ireland (assuming it's a 'real' office which I doubt) and you're not going to be doing a 9 to 5 job with a 15 minute drive to and from work each day. Instead, expect to be doing the red-eye Monday morning 4.00am flight to such exotic locations as Hamburg or alternatively being shipped away to Saudi for months on end with a cellphone being the only link between you and your home/family.I just don't know how people can do that kind of lifestyle.

I think that people are underselling Mck presence in Dublin. You can apply for that office though the recruitment process is done through London and you will travel (a lot!) as Mckinsey applies a near global staffing model. But you can live in Dublin (thats where your apartment will be) and be there on weekends at least. And people I know have exited McK Dublin into good Irish jobs.BCG and Bain both do a lot of work in Ireland, staffed from London but not suitable for somebody to who needs to live in Dublin as no guarantee of getting Dublin cases.Deloitte Consulting do some strategy work, as do some other of the Big 4 accounting/audit firms. These are not in the same league as MBB but are by no means bad. This might be a good option for you.

Also, to the guy that said that you'll never see the inside of your home office at MBB, that is total nonsense. I think Mck travel most of all but at BCG and Bain, you'd be very unfortunate to be travelling more than 50% of the time. And almost never travel 5 days week.

McK were advertising that they were recruiting in Dublin a few months ago. Not sure why though as they don't do much work here. Rarely come across Bain or BCG in Ireland and if yes, they are UK/US fly ins.
