Hi, I have just come from Australia with 4 years big four MC experience and looking for a management consulting job. In aus there are effectively two sites where almost all the jobs are posted. It appears in the uk the search process is much more of an ad hoc process with numerous sites (including this one) and agents. Is my take on the situation right? if so, is trying to find a boutique consulting role really a game of chance? Also I have heard that August is a really bad month for job ads given holidays. Is this right?Cheers.

Yes, yes, and er...yes. August is less good for job hunting than perhaps other months but that doesn't mean to say that there are not plenty of job ads for you to consider.A lot depends on what you do, where you want to go, and of course who is hiring right now as they have a pipeline of work to resource.

For Chops:Not sure what your speciality is (MC or IT Cons) or what level you are/years exp, but the sites he is referring to are:http://seek.com.au/http://mycareer.com.au/These are some other job sites:http://www.simplyhired.com.au/http://jobs.careerone.com.auhttp://jobs.efinancialcareers.com/Consulting/Australia.htmAnd these are some well known recruitment agents (albeit some tend to be more for IT focused jobs and a lot of them will post their roles on Seek and mycareer as well):www.talentinternational.com.auwww.greythorn.com/www.bluefinresources.com.au/www.michaelpage.com.au/www.randstad.com.au/www.tdassociates.com.au/www.attributeconsulting.com.auwww.carmichaelfisher.comwww.precisionsourcing.com.auAlternatively you could just identify the industry players in your sector and check them out directly. This guy's blog lists a number of strat and general consulting firms: http://www.tomspencer.com.au/2008/07/27/strategy-consulting-and-business-consulting-firms-list-australia/Also worth checking the career sections of firms directly (i'd say Deloitte and Acn have the best reps out of the IT Cons guys (Deloitte are not a big SI house as in the UK tho, more focused on IT Strategy etc). Worth looking at local players like Oakton as well.IBM's recruitment (in terms of their acknowledging applications) is poor from what i have heard).Strat-*BCG: http://www.bcg.com/careers/default.aspx*Mckinsey: http://www.mckinsey.com/careers/how_do_i_apply/apply_now.aspx*Bain: http://www.joinbain.com/*Booz: http://www.booz.com/global/home/join_us/apply/experienced_professionals*AT Kearney: http://www.atkearney.com/*Arthur D Little: http://www.adlittle.com/careers.htmlIT-*Deloitte: http://careers.deloitte.com/australia/experienced-professionals/experienced.aspx*Accenture: http://careers3.accenture.com/Careers/ASPX/Search.aspx?co=3&sk=0*PWC: http://careers.au.pwc.com/hr/careerweb.nsf/docid/ED2CD5B0B809BF31CA2573E9001CCD46*E&Y: https://tas-ey.taleo.net/careersection/gexp01/jobsearch.ftl?lang=en&location=76340070193*KPMG: http://careers.kpmg.com.au/Careers/ExperiencedProfessionals/JobSearch/tabid/53/Default.aspx*Oakton: http://www.oakton.com.au/*IBM: http://www-07.ibm.com/employment/au/

good post anon, seems august is also extra-helpful month on this forum...@nd you're correct August is normally quiet as any ongoing hiring is hampered by holidays. Still, it's worth going to the websites of the Big4 + ACN escpecially if your previous experience is relevant. Have a trawl through TC and forum and look at the flashy red/orange ad on the top of this page - will give you an idea of who's currently on a hiring spree :)Also if you've not dealt with recruiters here before, ask your UK MC network (assuming you have one) about who is worth talking to.
