Hi, I've started working from home and have a problem with my neighbours who listen to music virtually 24 hours per day. It's not exactly what you woudl call loud, but more the constant murmur of a pumping bass line to the crappy Eurodance tracks that they listen to 24/7.I've tried talking to them, but they don't speak English very well and are also extremely arrogant, to the point that they say they have already turned their subwoofer off despite the 50-100Hz rumble I can constantly feel through the floorboards.Any suggestions/ideas for dealing with people like this, please? I intend to move in the next couple of years so don't necessarily want to start involving the council or writing letters or anything like that.

I'm a fairly chilled out kind of guy. I like to think I'm easy going. But listening to the faint murmur of the bassline of Cascada tracks 24/7 and multiple remixes of Whigfield's 1990's "Saturday Night" hit over and over and over and over again is enough to distract anyone.

options....1. wear noise cancelling headphones2. if they have floorstanding speakers, treat them to some spike shoes from a hifi shop - they decouple and reduce the bass that gets transmitted into the floorboards. concrete slabs are even better but may not be well received...3. failing that, play opera back at them, particularly when you're out..

Some good suggestions here - thanks guys.Ultra Nate - I remember that song well (and liked it!). I remember in particular the heavy bass line to that song, which was sort of a melody in its own right. The bass line to the songs that my anti-social neighbours listen to, however, is more of a "thud thud thud". They seem to like 'novelty' music that involves a 'jumpy' sort of drum beat. In practice, it sounds like someone pounding at the walls and floorboards about 2 times every 3 seconds. Every now and then there will be a gap of silence for about 15 seconds - just long enough to build up the anticipation in my own mind and keep me completely on edge whilst I wait for the next round of "thud thud thud" to start.Polish Plumber - It's not that I don't like Europop. In fact, I quite like a lot of it, including many tracks from the 90's, e.g. the German artist Westbam's 'Celebration Generation', Ultra Nate, Capella, etc. However, my neighbours seem to prefer the more modern variety of Europop which introduces more of a RnB element than the techno/dance that I prefer. I can't stand RnB-inspired Europop. Or remixes of Whigfield when they're played on loop for 5 days in a row (Mon-Fri) when I'm trying to work. It is very distracting.Stud - Good suggestion, however I imagine his 'partner' (they have different surnames) may already have an STD. She is that 'sort'.Mars a Day - I have to admit I've been tempted to take up your first suggestion, i.e. resorting to direct ation. The problem is that society seems to have a warped idea of who is really the 'victim' in these kinds of situations.taxrebate - More good practical suggestions. I'll certainly look into noise cancelling headphones. But I can't believe it's come to this.aa - Another good suggestion that would work with any rational, cooperative neighbour. The problem is, I think he's half-deaf or something. He doesn't understand that even a fairly quiet rumble can be quite loud and distracting when it's played 20 hours per day. He thinks I'm being unreasonable in asking him to turn it down, to the point that he has lied about turning off his subwoofer presumably because, idiot that he is, he thinks it's all in my mind and I won't be able to tell the difference. At this rate I'm going to have to move!

Steve, you're sounding desperate so I thought I'd take the time and give you another solution.I understand that his girl puts it about a bit, so the STD trick won't work. Why don't you turf a brown one out outside his door in the middle of the night, every night for a month. He will get sick of stepping in it / cleaning it up and move.If he tries to be clever and jump out on you one night just as the puppies tail is saying hello, use this opportunity to run inside his flat and throw his speakers out of the window.Remember - he who dares, wins.

If they're renting, look into the lease agreement as most of them specify that they shouldn't made shedloads of noise at all hours. Get in touch with the landlords, who will hopefully deliver a bollocking. If they don't, then continue to make a terminal pain in the behind of yourself until they do. Rinse, repeat until the offenders move out or are thrown out.Alternatively, move.

I had this problem many years back in a flat I had. Totally unreasonable upstairs neighbours who played music all hours and wouldn't turn it down.Eventually I decided to reciprocate, moved my speakers to the top of some shelves, facing upwards so they were about 3 inches from her floor and put a tape (that's how long ago this was) blasting dance music (Altern-8, Infiltrate 202 - again, showing my age) so loud that her floorboards were rattling, while I went out for a few hours.I found her much more reasonable after that.

Well, I could try that these suggestions - thanks guys! It's good to know I'm not the first to have experienced this kind of situation.I may have to dig out my tapes with 1990's techno dance hits such as "Shades of Rhythm - Sound of Eden" and "Rachel Wallace - Feel this way". I have been advised that music such as this can bring even a Whigfield addict to his/her knees. If they continue to persist, then playing Ratpack's remix of "Manix - Feel Real Good" (1991) on loop should certainly finish them off.

Steve, Be direct. Dont bother with council letters, call your local police force citing disturbance of peace. As is my case, the 5th or 6th occasion you call (be sure to log the reference number they give you, so its all on record), they'll send a local officer over. If it continues, simple repeat. Its when matters are escalated, that these sort of people back down.
