IBM is offering me £46K for 4.5 years of experience for a role in GBS.Is that OK, too much or too little ?I also have an offer for a few grands more than that from an IB for a BA role.

OK. 2 points - i) for band 6 that is actually very good but ii) With 4.5 years experience, I'd be pushing for band 7. It's possible that the salary wouldn't be much different (the bands overlap a lot) but for obvious reasons it will take you a lot less time to get to band 8 if you start at band 7. Band 6 to 8 could take you over 5 years even if you're very good, dependent of course on many factors.

Thanks all.To clarify this is based in London. I would assume if anyone on band 7 receiving less than 30K would be somewhere in north. They have said the band is fixed at 6 and it was discussed by lot of people before deciding on where I would fit.Do you work for IBM? How quick is progression from 6 to band 7Cheers

Do you know which area of GBS the role is for?Yes, I do work for IBM.With your experience I would honestly be wary going in at band 6. Your offer is extremely high for that band so you could be waiting a long time for a pay rise (which I guess depending on what you were on before may be OK with you). Promotion to band 7 in theory could take you a year. More likely 2-4 years but I know of plenty of cases of even longer. Obviously I don't know what your experience is in but with 4.5 yrs I would want to be band 7 or on the verge of band 7. Having said all that, 46k is a very very good band 6 offer so if you are happy with that and happy with the job then go for it.

Thx again.Well...I will have to see what room I have for negotiating to band 7. They havent shown much flexibility. The role is with in FS consulting. Do you have any insights into this group in terms of career prospects and type of work ?

Promotion and pay rises are painfully slow in FS. I would go for a better quality outfit like Deloitte if you have any ambition
