Hi,I have recently been contacted by a couple of recruiters about in-house strategy roles at FTSE 100 firms - however I am wondering if it is too soon for me to move on.I initially worked for as an analyst for a boutique firm before then becoming a Strategy Analyst at a firm with annual revenues of c£100mI have been here for 1 year and enjoy the work- however, there are no promotion opportunities for me to develop a career in. I report directly to one of the Board members - hence there is no Strategy Manager position for me to aim for. I am keen to work at a firm which has a larger, more established strategy team where I can hopefully develop a long term career in.I would welcome your thoughts as to whether leaving my current employer after 1 year would look bad on the CV in the long term. Thanks,Peter

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I know plenty of people who've spent a year or less at an employer, and it hasn't prevented them from developing successful careers. I recruit people and I honestly wouldn't give a second thought to seeing something like this on their CV, especially if it was more than a couple of years ago.Obviously you don't want to make a habit of it, though, which means you need to make sure that the next position is right for you. One thing to bear in mind is that working for a boutique firm often exposes you to more variety and responsibility than being a small cog in a big machine, so you want to (a) make sure that you extract maximum career value from your current position, and (b) make sure that you're not moving to what is effectively a more junior position in terms of levels of responsibility.

No 1 year is not really enough, although as Expat suggests, you can - in some circumstances - get away with it. But if you leave after 1 year how does this really look? At best it looks like you have not done your DD, or it was flawed. Surely you knew who you would be reporting into? And that there would therefore be no short term promotion? A better option might be to look at what you can build out from this role, especially as you are reporting to the board so have some influence in your role - look at expanding laterally into other areas of the business, identify some projects you can take a lead on. Give it another year of pushing on these areas then make a move when you can confidently say you exhausted the potential of the role, and would be leaving it with a bigger platform for your successor than when you joined.
