Hello everyone,I have decided to leave IBM after 5 years with them and I have been in contact recently with Deloitte, KPMG and E&Y for a manager position in their IT advisory arm.I went through some interviews with them and so far they sound very similar. I would like to get your feedback as to what they really have to offer and their main differences- Differences in salaries?- Differences in pipeline and projects- Career opportunitiesTo give you some feedback as well:- So far I would say that Deloitte seemed that have the largest and best organised consulting arm.- KPMG had a clear idea of what they want to achieve and to do it.- E&Y seemed to be still in the early stages of having a proper consulting practive and appeared less structured.Comments and opinions welcome!

It's sad that the more interesting threads like this one get ignored... maybe highlights a lack of actual Big 4 consultants on the board?I work for Deloitte, but am relatively junior (and have only worked for the one firm), and would be interested to learn about the wider views of other 'big 4' consultants, in terms of the differences and similiarities between the firms.I'm more operations than I.T., so let's open up the thread! purely subjective view based on interviewing and hiring from those places into another consultancy (as a practice lead, not an agent)... Deloitte is the largest and has strongest client base. Downside expressed by many candidates from there was that it is very hierarchical and specialised, and once you get into a silo'd team it is very difficult to move sideways. E&Y has had several attempts at building this practice with mixed results. Culture is way more laid back than Deloitte however. Imho, E&Y consultants are less consistent in quality than Deloitte. Know less about KPMG, though know a couple of the partners and quite like the culture, which seems more collegiate than Deloitte. You should also look at PWC in that space - strong practice and I've met some good people from there.

Deloitte is by far the best option: it is, and has always been a proper consulting firm. Unlike KPMG/EY/PwC which have had to rebuild their consulting arms having sold their original consultancies to IT firms. In all cases this was done with non compete clauses meaning that they had to pretend to be mainly doing controls and compliance work. It’s getting broader now but that experience still taints a lot of the CVs I see.Deloitte consultants get better work and Deloitte is a better brand on the CV. EY pays best but don’t let that sway you: they are a shambles. KPMG don’t really feature as a proper consulting firm. PwC pay the worst

@Recruiter too: I agree Deloitte is the best of the lot at present, but I hear KPMG is trying to get into the SAP space by spinning out a new division and poaching talent from the SI's - how different are they as a "proper" consulting firm from EY's and PwC's efforts of 2-3 years ago? Will it all end in tears, beers and recruiters' cheers?

Hi,I think you are spot on with your assessment.I have been with EY IT Advisory for several years and I am looking to leave ASAP. Simple reason being there is no plan, structure, career development, shape or direction. We haven't won any good ITA projects for a long time, they are trying to cling onto clients where we made good revenues but they have passed their sell buy dates, the leadership team are bloody useless because they haven't won anything so and they are trying to find ways to keep their people because they know there is going to be a number of people handing in their notices in the next few months partly because of this and partly their has been no payrises too. Whats more they are recruiting people but some of us here are not sure where the work is coming from because they always keep it hush hush about the pipeline and growth. If you want EY on your CV as a brand name, go ahead and stick it out for a couple of years or try and get into Deloitte.

No experience with EY, but they get a really bad press on here and I know that they don't tend to keep good people for very long

EY tried to break into the Finance Transformation space about 5 years ago, by bringing in some big names from IBM, and it was a complete flop. They've got an ex-CG guy running the practice now and he seems to be making a start in turning it around. However the atmosphere and culture is still very negative, and there is a big reliance on central government jobs which is probably not a wise place to be now that the new government is in place.Deloittes are very much more professional, but really work your a**e off. Be prepared to kiss your weekends goodbye.

I've been working with Deloitte for two years and have only worked weekends twice (for cutover which I think is reasonable and I got time back in lieu). It really depends on what your client is, if you work for Public Sector your client tends to come in at 10am and leave at 4pm so your work life balance is pretty good. If however you are working in Banking, you tend to find that clients work till midnight so you invariably find yourself sitting there wtih them till midnight.

Cheers for the comments...What's weird is that E&Y is claiming to be in a position to triple the size of their ITA practice in 3 years. So that means they can't only rely on long-running contracts with the government, they must be chasing other sectors, otherwise there is no way they can achieve this in the current context (government spendings cut down by 25% in some departments in the next couple of years). They have just offered me a contract, however the starting date is in 3 months, that's crazy! Why do they need to put it so far away in the future? What are they waiting for? One positive thing I noted during the interview process is that EY seemed to have a much more positive and helping attitude towards their employees. Furthermore, according to what they've told me, they are keen to invest on developing people. Apparently a large number of AP /P have come through the ranks. So hoes does it compare with Deloitte on that side?

I work at EY in Advisory area and feel that the Avisory practice is still immature compared to Deloitte for example. I am trying to move to Delottie consulting now as I can see my career progresses better there.
