Build a time machine and go back 20 years to when there was a market for external ISO advice. Otherwise, get a job in industry.

Very encouraging thanks....that means industry does not need anyone to get accreditation any more?..which is pretty much the requirement of industries now and all the big accreditaion bodies should stop accrediting the industries?...and industries have all the time in the world to do it on their own and at the end get disqualified by the accrediting body....for not understanding the standard requirements properly.....

Well I was surprised on joining my employer (think blue-chip, very well known listed plc) that their new division had nothing in the way of ISO, quality, HSE etc.We had been managing with an external consultant to put in place the necessary reporting systems. He got a foot in the door simply through cold calling. So, there are still opportunities out there, sometimes in the least likely places. Good luck...

There is an adequate supply/oversupply of people who can do the work in-house. There is very little call for external ISO advisors these days and, where it is needed, the situation tends to be so complex that you would employ one of a handful of deep experts who have been instrumental in drawing up the ISO specifications. If you are interested in ISO consultancy, you would be better to get a job in industry with a big company. You may then have some opportunity to rotate around the business over the course of your career, and eventually become a kind of "internal consultant".

You don't mention any specific ISO standard - do I presume you mean just ISO 9000? If so the other posts here have pretty much summed up the situation. On the other hand there are some specific ISO standards, particularly on the IT management side, covering security, process maturity, service management and IT governance that still often require consultancy support.

Well ISO 9000 is pretty much generic anyway and even IT firms fo for it before embarking upon CMM and other stuff...ISO 9000 is pretty generic anyway. Then there should be good opportunities available in ISO 14000 which environment related so with OHSAS 18001 etc...but its just getting the foot in the door...because other than certification, consultants are good in audits by default and an eye for improvement in the current system....i am still trying to find some UK consultant forum with consultant having ISO background..any suggestions towards that?...thanks
