ANON - have you been held back by not having the MSc? Have you seen any opportunities where the MSc would have been an advantage? If you have 10 years experience it doesn't feel like an MSc would the right thing for you.

I have completed the MSc from Oxford and was in the first Cohort. It is an extremely good opportunity for someone who has been in the profession for as long as you have to stop, reflect and reevaluate your work and that of your colleagues around you. What are you hoping to get from a Master's degree?

I wonder if they do a PhD in the same subject, which will then enable you to manage multi-trillion dollar programmes?

Sometimes it's great how threads work on the forum.3 year ago someone said hmm considering doing this MSc and then as if recently risen from a deep 3 year slumber (perhaps woken by a gentle kiss from a Billion dollar programme) someone pipes up and says what do you want to get from this degree. If it has taken the OP 3 years of indecision on this I am going to have to say it doesn't matter what they do!

As someone who has completed the masters and who has 27 years experience in programme and project management I can offer you a few thoughts. The subject matter, major programmme management, means that this is a course for experienced people who already run programmes worth tens of millions and who understand that there is much still to be understood about delivering programmes both large and small. This course not only offers you the intellectual challenge of an Oxford masters but also undertaking a journey of self development with a peer group whose experience will add considerably to your knowledge. On my course the cohort possessed in excess of 500 man years of relevant cross industry experience from rebuilding failed States, through major infrastructure and technology projects to people who really do build rockets. It was one of the best and hardest things I have ever done, particularly as it was undertaken while working. If you are also planning to do it part time you need to be realistic about the level of effort you will need to sustain as you will need to average 15 hours a week over two years with the dissertation boosting that number significantly.

Fast - cheap - good: you can have any two. If we all teach that to the decision makers on our programmes, we can skip the Masters.Job done boys, next subject. But on a serious note, this does look good if it didn't cost an arm and a leg. Cost vs Benefit analysis needed methinks.
