Please list top tips for negotiating a good salary/package!I'll start the thread with the following:1. Always avoid disclosing your current salary if you can. He who mentions a figure first during a negotiation, always loses.2. If negotiating with a current employer, take it easy from April to Jan, then be extra friendly and helpful to everyone from Feb to March. Bosses have very short-term memories when it comes to important matters such as the level of your pay rise. Also, if you work too hard for most of the year, they expect it from you as the 'norm' and hence it will be difficult for you to 'shine' when you want to.

Be very clear before you enter into any negotiations what your absolute minimum position is and stick with it.

ALWAYS go in to a negotiation naked.....it really throws them, they don't know what to do, where to look leaving you perfectly positioned to go in for the kill!

Sorry I disagree Nigel. If you go in naked, and they ask you about your package - it will be very obvious to them if you have a small one. However if you go in fully clothed, you can easily lie about your current package (massive base, lots of add-ons, above industry standard) and ask for an even bigger one!

Dilbert if you're going round asking for a big package frankly you should at least save it for your weekend!

Clearly Dilbert I am confident in using this tactic because I don't need to lie about the size of my package (which I am sure you will agree is a good thing not lying in a job application!) however you appear to be a little reticent about employing this method........because....:-O

essentially you should never talk about YOUR package - the discussion should be how massive the offered package is, and whether this meets your expectations and is a good fit.

Yes, not good to mention your current package.Ask yourself this:Why do almost ALL job ads, instead of giving a salary (or even a range), usually just put "£££ Competitive" or "£££ Excellent"?It's because they don't want to limit their options. And neither should you.
