Blimey - that's quite a rant about the evils of consultants! Who'll wade in first and spring to our defence?!

The debate on the MSE forum actually seems more balanced and fair to consulting than a lot of stuff that people post on this forum. And that is in the context of the thread being initiated by someone (StiflersMom) with an obvious axe to grind (e.g. the digs at PwC), and discussed by people who are never going to be informed as consultants themselves about the sector. The job advert referenced in the discussion was provocative in implying (accurately or not) that the general standard of capability in local government is low. However, the advert achieves its objective in appealing to those in local government who are capable and motivated, and who feel frustrated by the people around them/being tarred with the same brush. The advert is validated by the fact that people (from local government) apply to the job. Indeed, MSE posters have made the argument that the public sector really does need the external support described by the advert.Comparing the standard of debate in MSE and TC forums, this is another argument for forum registration.

The public sector would collapse without management consultants. Could you imagine what kind of mess the short sleeve and polyester tie brigade would leave in their wake.I still chortle at the signs on canteen fridges in government departments imploring you to only use your own milk and mug. Pathetic fools thry might be - but we pay our taxes for these dullards

@Normarn T: Those same signs appear on just as many private sector fridges (companies to which you also pay money), so that is perhaps not an ideal example to make your point.

Never ever seen signs like that at any private sector client. Might be that you work for a lower level of client than most - local garages, hairdressers, that sort of thing

Kirf - what sort of private sector clients do you work for? I have never sign anything like that in 22 years of consulting for mainly private sector companies.

@Normarn T, Anon: See fridges at Credit Suisse, One Cabot Sq. and BGI/BlackRock on King William St. for just two examples. You are obviously not in client-facing roles, hence you haven't seen many client' offices and noticed these things.
