Hi, I have 2 years experience at one of the big five defining defect resolution strategy. I now want to get into broader strategic work at MBBB - do you think my CV will stand up? Is DR a good stepping stone into a more business focussed role?

You might get into McKinsey Business Technology Office (BTO), or one of Booz Allen Hamilton's (BAH) technology practices if you have strong academics and good connections, but not the broader business strategy practices.

In principle I would potentially be interested, but would need to know more about you.

Here is some more information.In addition to defining the defect resolution strategy on a major systems integration project, I also facilitated the configuration management blueprint and implemented the environment management strategy. I'm sure ZB would love "defect resolution strategy" and "environment management strategy".Come on let's be serious: defining a process about how the IT guys should correct bugs identified during user testing has NOTHING to do with business strategy or even what the BTO does.This thread is another example of IT people using the word strategy for everything they do until they convince themselves "they would be more of a natural fit to the strategy houses of this world". I didn't find it that amusing personally, at least until someone took the bait.As a former IT guy who is now a strategy consultant I think that Ex-McKinsey needs to lighten up a little. IT can be a good place to launch a career and there's no reason why an IT guy shouldn't end up doing strategy work, as it's not as amazingly hard (and IT not necessarily as easy) as some people like to make out.That said, his point about the overuse of the word "strategy" is one of my pet peeves also. If it's a plan, call it a plan. If it's a process, then call it a process. Just don't call it a fecking strategy and add another nought on the end of the bill.EC
