My background is PhD in engineering from a top university, passed CFA lvl 1, 7 years experience, now with a very stable utility company and feel underpaid.Almost 30, am I too late to switch to consulting? Would I get a pay cut (<$100k) for being new to the game?

I would say no as I from a very similar background and recently converted.I joined PwC as I senior associate but you may take a pay cut due to lack of consultancy exp which would come up quickly if you perform or so ive been told

Yeah. If it's not one thing, then it's another. Always some excuse why they can't pay you as much as you want right now, but how it may increase in the future. Yadda yadda yadda.

i came from Pharma based on the recommendation of others knowing that this was a side of the business the UK firm was trying to grow. I havent regretting it yet although its very different but in a good way so you will have to adapt quickly. The diversity of the work is great but the only negative thing i would say so far it that travel can be tough sometimes although so far ive found it very manageable...(Im now waiting for everyone to come and shoot me down based on my last statement but dont believe all the negative comments you here on this website!)Also remember the experience you get will put you in a better position if you decided to go back into industry

just for clarity, the pay cut you take, may not actually be that much as in my case

So, should I start trying boutique like firms or big names? Any thoughts and why?
