Can anyone offer me anyone convincing reasons why someone of my elite caliber (superior academics, extra-curriculars, and work experience) should join consulting?I await your responses.

Perhaps you are a masochist and enjoy the 'challenge' of operating in an environment where your best is never good enough and basically you thrive on being mentally abused by people who are richer and/or happier than you?

Bob,Please don't.There are enough people in consulting already who have an overly inflated opinion of themselves and I don't want the probability that I'll have to work with another jumped-up little tosspot to be raised. Pretty much everyone I work with has at least two of these three credentials, so it is likely that you're nothing special really.EC

Bob,I am afraid that you don't really understand the real world if you think that you can take that approach and get real answers on an anonymous forum. Why should we go out of our way to write a decent length response to someone who is either a) quite arrogant b) a serious competitor or c) just winding people up?Then again, there are the traps of self-publicity and self-denial that consultants seem to be unable to avoid. We have to sell how good consulting is to a) persuade people how good our careers / lives / jobs are and b) keep clients thinking we're good value. So I am stuck with a dilemma. Do I help you, and encourage a competitor who could cost me my job somewhere down the line? Do I tell you how bad it is to avoid this? But if I tell you how bad it is, will clients read that and think we're not worth the money? Will that, in the long run, be more damaging to my career and the industry as a whole? Might you be such a good consultant that you single-handedly reinforce the external perception of the industry and save it from the downturn through your Herculean efforts?Who cares. My printing's finished so I can go home now.
