Does anyone have advice as to how to handle a redundancy with recruiters? i.e. is it advisable to simply say that ' my skills didnt match with the company and therefore I was made redundant ( official line given by my company)', or say that I voluntairily resigned because of skills incompatability etc...?

Let us be clear on this one: there is no shame or fault in being made redundant whatsoever; keep this in the forefront of your mind as I have seen professional, intelligent, motivated MCs cripple themselves mentally and emotionally by thinking redundancy carries some sort of stigma. If you can take a week out before looking for your next role to get over it and adjust: finding a new role should be a full time position in its own right, if done properly, and remember that that the MCs markets will continue hiring regardless. Show me the MC firm which wants to repeat what happened last time (and can afford to repeat it) and I'll show you either the richest MC firm on the planet or a cluster of idiots.Just tell the recruiter you have been made redundant and if they need an explanation set it against the wider context of what has happened within the company/sector whatever.

Have to agree with Mars on this; also don't delude yourself into thinking you are the only person from your company that the recruiter is dealing with. Also interstingly enough, most companies now use a service like verifile which will check your reasons for leaving your old comopany. There is always churn in consulting, and granted while I am of the charlatan trade there are a fair number of companies hiring.Don't lie to your recruiter all they will do is pass your lie on down the line.

Am I missing something? Just blame the credit crunch and say the company had to let people go. End of.

I've been in consulting for 18 years and been laid off 3 times (2 due to the firms going into receivership and 1 was a hire and fire outfit). There is absolutely no stigma involved. What I personally did was to spend time out contracting , identify by networking where the industry is going next and get in the slip stream.Firms always recruit staff with skills and experience they require nowps always have income and mortgage protection for 24 months
