I would really appreciate som input from recruiters, hiring managers, HR etc. I have received, and verbally accepted an offer from a competitor.However, I am now concerned that this has been the wrong decision - I have not signed, or returned any paperwork. Now I have another offer on the table for a role which is far more appealing, which I would prefer to accept.My query is whether the verbal acceptance is binding or not - I know in some professions (teaching, law) that a verbal acceptance is final. Please excuse my naivety on this, as I am young and impressionable, but I would really appreciate your input.

You're fine, even written acceptance is not binding until you step over the door of your new company. In any event, you won't be the first fish that got away, consultancy companies are used to it so just be honest with them you had a change of heart.

Cynic and Night John Boy, to put your collective minds at rest, the paper contract is only part of it, as the employment contract you have verbally agreed to is a contract OF services; until and unless you set foot on their property you have no enforceable commitment to them as the contract has not been formed yet.Just tell them you have changed your mind (after some serious soul searching - lay it on thick to make them feel better). You won't have any problems.

You don't write where you are. In the US personal performance contracts are not enforecable.
