Recruiter or Employee referral effective?

Hi, I applying as experienced hire for some Big 4 and niche management consultancies, what are people's views on which route is most effective to get an early interview and/or higher salary 1) via a recruiter or 2) via an internal employee referral? I would just like to know if one route is faster or more preferred by the HR departments and whether a recruiter route is better for helping you negotiate a higher salary? Thanks for insights

the recruitment agency's client is the company, not the candidate - and like estate agents selling houses they would rather spend time selling the next lot rather than finessing the price on this one, as a percentage of a small increase is not worth much compared to the time invested.. if you can get referred, go that way

Also bear in mind that many companies offer recruitment referral bonuses to employees, so an indirect form of income, and you have to be in the company to do it, but definately worth having - so why not be part of the system..?
