HelloCan you give me some advice on how to make the most of the Careers Fair, please?I'll be attending the Careers Fair on the 10th for the first time. What can I expect from the Consultancies there? Will they be interviewing or just ansering some questions...?What about the recruiters?Does it make sense to take a lot of printed CV's with me...or just some business cards?Any advice on how to make the most of the fair...and also how to make a good impression, is much appreciated. Many thanks.

I don't think they actually carry out interviews... but do take a few CVs with you and use it as an opportunity to gather information, find out whether the companies you're interested in are right for you, and hopefully make a good impression so that they remember you when your application lands on their desk. Just be yourself and act professional, also make sure you get contact details of people you speak to and follow up in a non-pushy way. Good luck!

Columbo - if you've ever been to a university careers fair, the format is quite similar. Firms at their stands answering questions and getting a first impression of the candidates they meet, rather than any formal interviewing taking place at the actual fair. However you should certainly assume that an impression is being formed about you at the event - I certainly know of a number of firms who encourage the more promising candidates to interact with the firm in a different way than those who they were less impressed by.Re. CV, it can't hurt to have some copies of this with you to talk through with those who ask to see it. Some firms will have a "must interview" pile where they will put the CVs of those they were really impressed by, so again this can help in bypassing the usual application procedures and getting you straight to the interview stage.Hope this helps - and see you at the Consultancy Careers Fair.Tony RestellTop-Consultant.com

Incidentally, it will be interesting if the company that was handing out generic "Visit www.ourwebsite.com/careers to apply!!!!" business cards will have learnt from their mistake and will take a slightly more personal and professional approach this time. As if we couldn't figure out that you can apply via the website....

wow, it's staggering to notice how bland, generic, common sense banalities can be passed off as useful advice.
