Hi there I have a PhD in chemical engineering and am shortly embarking on a career in consultancy working for the big 4. Salary is only slightly more than what Im on now but Im hoping this role will open some more doors in the future. Ive been used to 9-5 pretty much since I left uni so Im getting myself ready for the change in terms of longer hours and travel commitments. Can anyone give me any serious advice as to what else to expect? Many thanks

It does vary hugely according to which project you work on. I have spent 1 year working in central London and another year travelling throughout Europe, for different clients. My hours range from 45 to 80, again depending on the client. You will have some choice on client and location and they'll usually try to be understanding of commitments when it's a first project, but you do have to be flexible and can knock back 1 or 2 things and then you have to take what's on offer.Although the salary might be broadly similar now, I would guess that in future it will be markedly different as you gain consulting skills and experience. And, whilst the hours might be long(er), the variety, challenge and experience is great (if that's what you're up for).Enjoy your new job, your experience will count for a lot - all experience is good experience, and don't be afraid to speak up and contribute from day 1. Good luck.
