From a guy that has about 2 years in IT, and would like to be working in management/strategic consulting in midterm what are the steps?gradually step away from IT to some things like IT advisory, IT planning at some Big$ company?invest in a MBA...?get drunk and forget about?

No expert, but I'd suggest you dump your CV on a dozen doorsteps for grad roles and see whether you get invited for an interview.If that fails, some IT advisory followed by an MBA would be viable. MBAs are often seen as a 'career switcher'.good luck

gonnabebig, depends what you have been doing in IT and for which company ? Depening on previous roles (and company image) you can (slowly) move away from IT to management consulting/strategy. For example; the steps from an architect role at a big integrator to (IT) strategy role at tier-2 is for sure possible. Taking steps from SAP specialist at a small IT integrator to Growth Strategy consultant at tier-1 is impossible.Depending on your background a move into IT advisory is a step in the right direction. After that start sending your CV. If that doesn't work, invest in an MBA (or why not do that anyway?).

Mark and dutchconsultant.baywords.com thanks :)My background (these 2 years) is with a strong component of web development that includes requirements elicitation, coaching small teams, planing solutions architecture, programming and documenting.At the moment i really want to invest in a MBA, but not until got some more experience with something (whether it is hardcore IT ou something more closer to management/strategic consulting). I think that going to a MBA with "no luggage" is not getting the best of it (but i can be wrong).which companies with IT Advisory can provide a nice mid step?thanks ;)

Instead of pointing out the problems he will be facing you just wrap it up as 'IT boys are a joke'.A bit of a reality check for you; depending on the IT background and achieved results it is possible to make steps towards strategy. Perhaps not into marketing strategy, but in some area's an IT background might actually help. With a very strong CV (IT) it is possible to make a move to RB, ATK, OC&C and BCG (it has been done).The only joke and looser is UareItLooser.

Yeah, all of the firms dutchconsultant mentioned use computers and are very reliant on their IT. gonnabebig - your best realistic hope of working in management or strategy consulting is in the back office. These jobs are not widely advertised so you should check the websites of the firms in question and call them directly to ask about opportunities in their IT/professional support departments.

UareItLooser and another anonwell i don't share your opinion, but it can be a valid one. I know some people with a strong background in IT that are working at MCK, BCG, ATK...... Just take a walk in linkedin and you'll find some people like that. It can be hard, but not impossible. If I can be up to the challenge, future will tell us.Please don't try to be superior to others because you are in management consulting (if you are.....). There is no great professional if you aren't a great man in life. This point i think I have the advantage over you two.Thanks for the feedback anyway ;)
