I am a 35 year old management consultant who has decided to change careers. I have a very academic CV and six years of work experience in an IT bodyshop. The more I learn about brain surgery, the more it appeals to me as a career. I believe that major head injury and sore brain trauma will be future boom areas and I would have a good background for working in those sectors. Does anyone else think that I stand a chance? Is there anyone who can give me some practical advice on how to approach my career change?

GA, I would try the NHS's website (www.nhs.uk) where you will find the member hospitals broken down by areas of specialisation. Might give you an idea of which hospitals to target. Regards, Dave

Why would anyone want to be a doctor? MC's also have to work with sick people but at least we don't have to touch their insides.

hey GA,I am currently a doctor in central london and am thinking of becoming a M.C- this is funny, you want to become a doctor now? You will have to study a MBBS for five years and have a Bsc to stand a chance for a good post. You might get lucky and get on to a graduate programme as I did which was 3 years as i had a degree in neuroscience. its a big move. jobs are few and you are planning to go into a really competitive rotation..let me know if need more help.

Yes, you can probably become a doctor. But probably not a brain surgeon. I used to be a brain surgeon. I do healthcare consulting now. BS training is very tough and competitive. Are you sure you want to spend many years of your life in the ER and OR? More importantly do you have the stamina to do that?

It is certainly possible. The infamous André Romelle Young has successfully been doing both for some time now.

André Romelle Young works in a highly specialised area. Whilst it is true that he is a succesful doctor he has not proven that he is cabaple of working despite adversity. Professionals such as Curtis James Jackson III have been just as succesful despite a difficult upbringing.

I wasn't aware that Curtis James Jackson III graduated as a Doctor?Indeed, I understand he was recently taken to court over $32,500 in unpaid medical fees. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/3006357.stm

The original post was a joke, due to the numerous threads on here from doctors wanting to get into consulting these days
