Mr Laptop user

What's the best way to back up my PC? Currently I have a personal laptop with about 35Gb of personal files (letters, digital photos, scanned copies of credit card statements and correspondence, downloads of holiday videos from my fancy HDD digital camcorder, etc) and am starting to think that I need a good, reliable, incremental backup facililty in case disaster strikes. Any ideas? Ideally I'm thinking of some kind of free online backup service... the best I've found so far is 12Gb free online backup space but in this day and age really I need about 50Gb! It sounds like a huge amount but frankly 50Gb is hardly anything these days. I know BT do a digital vault service, but you only get 1Gb for free and that's practically useless in this day and age of digital media where even a single set of hi-res holiday snaps can be a couple of Gb. I did also think about getting an external USB hard disk for the backups but really I want it to be a) off-site and b) incremental. Also I guess with the USB thing there is a security issue - I'd rather not have my lifetime's work and all sorts of personal financial files, holiday photos etc insecurely held on some USB hard disk in the back of my car. Any good ideas that won't cost a fortune?

Back at Cornell University, there is a piece of equipment called the FAC34C electron microscope. This is the most powerful, technologically advanced and expensive microscope in the world, able to elucidate and characterise the the structure of atoms and molecules, the infitessimably small building blocks of life. Mr Laptop user, if was using that microscope right now, I still wouldn’t be able to locate my interest in your question. Thank youZB

Use two USB HDDs then - leave one locked away at work.. or just use a stack of DVD-Rs (only last a few years though).

ZB,What a quality put down. It's even better the second time around. (http://forum.top-consultant.com/UK/list.aspx?ID=38607)By the way, if you are going to cut and paste it onto the forum for a third time, you might want to correct the spelling of 'infitessimably' before you do. I'd hate for you to come across as an ignorant bigot. It's 'infitessimally'.
