Hello everybody! In a few weeks I will get my MSc and I am absolutely determined to get into strategic management consulting. Because of my "not-orthodox" background I was thinking of first targeting niche (but still prestigious) firms and then maybe move after some "induction" years, maybe.I have done quite a lot of specific research on this matter, and my best target is PIMS Associated Ltd. They have a very "scientific" way of doing strategy, and I noticed their methodology used to be in many management textbooks written in the 70s and 80s. Used to have many offices, but now it looks as if they are part of a bigger Suisse consulting firm (MZSG), very much into cybernetic management. Any piece of advice? Am I completely out of my mind?

I quote 'I noticed their methodology used to be in many management textbooks written in the 70s and 80' - just answered your own question.

Do you really believe that strategic management re-inventend itself in the last 15 yrs? Methodologies have really changed so much? And anyway, from the articles I read the MZSG side of PIMS looks very much up to date and cutting edge.My original question still remains...

Not sure what the best advice is here. PIMS are known in the consulting fraternity, mainly on process optimisation and operational effectiveness. They are also associated with business transformation, change management, but are particularly weak on programme management. This stems from antiquated processes, methodology, systems and group-think. The commercial proposition looks susceptible to stagnant growth and scarcity of innovation, however a solid client base, strong links to vendors and parochial service offering provide them with adequate cushion to navigate any economic downturn. I do find their strategic thinking slightly condescending and myopic, however that’s only opinion….ZB

Hey guys, I think this is still a free and democratic forum, right?I've been in business for quite a while, but I've never heard of PIMS, all the more interesting...I'm now curious to know more about them; correct me if I am wrong, but not many niche consultancy firms manage to get in textbooks...right?This thread has a lot of potential, mainly because of ZB, he/she touched real keywords for us in the business: fraternity, commercial proposition, innovation, condescending and myopia...don't you think so?I worked for McK and BC...well..it was all about that...Yet, they are top tier firms...but I've never heard of PIMS (by the way, what does it stands for?)...My advice?...go and look for boutique, young and growing firms...those are the best places to be for a youngster seeking career opportunities and interesting projects...I agree with Mars A Day...this niche firm smells of sth taken out of mothballs...Good luck with your job hunting!...and stay away from mothballs...

-PaulApart from you comments, have you got any comments on my original post, any piece of advice?Any help is welcomed!PS: I understand what's behind your comment Paul, but I am sure that most people taking part in this forum are youngsters who need some guidance and direction from the much smaller group of experienced "members". Which means that there is an intrinsic (and normal) unbalance, and this is indeed what gets this forum going in the end...

Could we please put a belated thick line under this thread. It is pointless, irrelevant and thoroughly worthless. Do you work for ACN by any chance, possibly in system integration, change management, process optimisation or whatever useless specialism that they offer?ZB
