First things first, I’m a very hygienic person. But, let’s cut to the chase. I sweat a fair amount. Under normal conditions, I’m OK. But when I’m working in a building with no, or very poor air con, I’m out of luck. In this industry, you work in a variety of locations and some of them are awful 60’s buildings which simply weren’t built to handle the amount of heat generated by modern office machinery. This causes me two problems – sweating and lethargy. My core temperature rises to a level which affects my performance.Anybody else experienced this? What coping strategies do you deploy?

Right Guard + grin and bear it. Your client works under the same conditions every day.

Yes, but they've chosen to work there (and may have become inured to it). The same could be said of having to stay somewhere disagreeable during the week, e.g. Warrington. It doesn't make it any better.

Keep a bottle of water on your desk and sip it frequently.Sit near a window and keep it open.Wear a short-sleeve shirtDon't wear a tie unless you have toWear 100% cotton shirts that breathe wellUse Nikwax or something similar to wash a 'wicking' agent into your clothes (to help them absorb sweat and wick it away from your body until it evaporates)Wear shoes that breathe well (this makes a big difference for me... my shoes get VERY hot)Go to the bathroom frequently and splash your face with cool waterIf things get extreme, do something like freezing a bottle of water the night before and having the icy lump on your desk so you can touch it from time to time to cool down and/or drink the freezing cool waterSit out of direct sunlightGet a short haircutSuck icecubes if you have access to a freezer

Drink plenty of water (if your teeth can stand it, get water from the chilled tap of the water cooler or put water bottles in the office fridge to chill).Wash your hands (and wrists where the circulation is close to the surface of the skin) with cold water.Don't wear a tie or jacket unless essential.Keep your hair cut short to minimise unnecessary insulation. Some people also find wearing a light vest works despite the extra insulation it provides. This is because they know that they'd be sweating even without the vest and it at least absorbs/disperses the moisture before it reaches their shirt, making it less obvious they're sweating.
