Hi makingachange. You mention both retail and management consulting. Could you clarify your preferences? For example, are you thinking of going into external consulting with retail businesses as your clients, or working as an internal consultant for a retail business, or did you just mean retail as a general term of the commercial sector? There are a number of consultancies that hold recruiting rounds and introductory events aimed specifically at people transitioning from the armed services. Off the top of my head, firms including Booz Allen Hamilton, PA Consulting, Atos and Detica are frequently involved. The firms involved in these events are generally those with large government, logistics, aerospace/defence and security industry consulting practices as this is where a lot of military experience is most applicable. For retail sector consulting, it's less likely that firms would actively seek out ex-military candidates, but you could look at Javelin Group and McMillan Doolittle among others. From the experience you describe, it sounds like you'd most likely come in at an Associate grade with a starting salary (for the firms mentioned above) in the USD 80-100k range.
