This may seem like a daft question but I would like to what constitutes a niche or boutigue consulting firm. I am considering leaving my blue chip consulting firm to join a smaller, more agile and 'human' consulting firm. However, I am not sure if there is a place to start looking for the top 10/20/50 firms in this space operating in the UK.

Try downloading the Top-Consultant "Fastest Growing Firms" report, it's a year old now but the niche firms flagged up in it will still be amongst the best niche firms to consider. PDF available from:http://www.top-consultant.com/fastest_growing_firms_2007.pdfHope this gives you some good pointers.Tony RestellTop-Consultant.com

These reports are awesome. I'm quite frankly amazed that T-C doesn't charge for them. 10 out of 10 for quality content and providing an excellent service, as always! Very many thanks to Tony and the T-C team.

Think you should also consider what in consulting it is that you want to do as many niche firms specialise in, well, a niche such as Strategy, Change, Operations, Supply Chain etc. If you give let us know what your specilism is then we can advise more

Thanks for all the responses. This is turning out to be a very resourceful thread from my perspective.I appreciate that niche firms tend to specialise in one or two focus capabilities. My exprience has centred mainly around Change Management with CRM transformation projects. However, I have also been involved in delivering Design and Marketing Strategy.Hope this is sufficient info for providing further useful input.Cheers

Thanks for the positive feedback! The 2008 edition of our recruitment report will be published in 10 days. Once that is available for download I'll create a thread on here that details the download links for all the free reports we make available to readers (there are half a dozen from memory). Newsletter subscribers will have received alerts of these as they've been published, but I agree with you that having one place that lists them all out would be a good addition to the site - especially for first-time visitors.Tony RestellTop-Consultant.com

Seriously guys - this is all very useful info and I think I now have a decent amount of info to get going here.Hope you don't mind if I touch base from time to time to seek more advice or simply update on progress.Barring the odd sarcasm and cynicism, I have been a loyal user of this forum for years and it has never let me down - keep up the great work.Tony - I'd really appreciate if you could post the link to the new Consulting report when it's ready. In terms of new ideas, I was wondering if you have considered having a presence on Facebook - I appreciate it can be a road to disaster but could potentially turn out to be very engaging.Thx all!

How does the culture and remuneration in these niche firms compare with the larger full service consulting firms? Hours? Pay? Travel? Hierarchical?
