I am exploring an opportunity at a small firm that is setting up a new office in a country.I had the feeling from my discussion with their partner that I have strong bargain power because they really lack talent in the region. The partner said they can offer 48k (assume country's currency), I told him it's not enough without actually saying a figure; he said that it's okay it won't be a problem for them and that we can talk about it later on.How much higher do you think I can usually negotiate? Is +25% reasonable? higher? lower? What is your negotiation experience?

What you really have to know is what 48k means in that country. Is it a real monster of a salary, or is it the going rate (as deteremined by some HR Guru) or is it the bottom end and the first offer. You must also be absolutely sure and certain of your position. I

Thanks Bill.I know it's about 10% below what top paying consultancies are offering in the country.I am confident it's negotiable but what is the best strategy to approach this?

Know how much the job is actually worth, and be prepared to walk away from the opportunity if they don't offer it. If they're offering you 10% below the market rate, then ask for 15-20% more (55K-57.5K) and don't settle for less than the market rate of about 53K. Don't ask for silly money unless you're prepared to walk away from the opportunity. The most important thing is to make an effective argument - give them data to show what the market rate for this kind of position is.
