OK - it is with a lump in my throat that i start this topic... But anyway, i'm feeling brave today. So bascially I want to get a new watch, have up to £3K to spend. Don't want it for any other reason other than a 30 bday pressie to myself and cos i like nice things. Want a classy, classic look and want to avoid Cartier and Rolex. I'd like something original...Any ideas?

Why would anyone spend £3k on a watch? Doesn't a £40 one still tell the time......yes I am married....and yes I do have two kids and a mortgage. For gods sake save the money .... you will need it later on!!!

It's been a long week - I'm knackered and I need to fork out for a new fridge (Mrs. Wad says we NEED a big one at around £1100). Please no more talk of expensive and unnecessary consumption. Have kids and get them to spend your money - or even better buy my fridge for me and get a Swatch.I would like to point out that envy and bitterness are strangers to me.

Lady, you gotto be kiddin' spending that kind of money on a watch. Go do some internet shopping; I just bought a $2000 value watch for less than a tenth of it's listed price and yes it is the real real thing, not a fake

Price drop TV is great if you want a watch for a tenth of its listed price. Of course it does make you wonder if anybody is actually paying full price

Thanks for the comments...Re why would anyone spend 3K on a watch, precisely because I am single and have no kids!!! And yes I do save for long term stuff but at the end of the day I work hard and like having nice things... Reverso are nice - tho they seem a little too dainty - might try a bloke's one...Patek are just silly money! I have my limits too...

Lump, there are several segments in the expensive watch space (check out my consultant approach). Some are more or less just brands (like Rolex). So you buy them to signal that you've got some money (and that you don't really give a damn about watches). Some are more or less just bling (so you buy them because you like bling). And then there are watches that have history, tradition, mechanical innovation and perfection (some would say Rolex fits into here as well). As a miss, noone expects you to be a watch expert. You probably just want to signal out that you have got money, taste and culture. And you want to do it in a subtle way (coz you don't like rolex cartier). Unless you really appreciate watchmaking, don't spend that much money on a watch. Women's watches come and go into fashion very easily and you will end up with something you find boring and that has depreciated immensely (almost no resale value).Buy a £500-1000 fashionable watch and wear it 3-5 years. If you are really into watches, you can find incredible bargains on old womens watches on ebay. Search for Vacheron Constantin, Patek and likes. Hand wound movements last long and don't need expensive servicing frequently (unlike the current self-winding movements). Perhaps a new / trendy strap replacement and you will be good to go. It is a cool hobby too.

After a couple of years the novelty will wear off, it'll become 'just a watch' and you'll accidentally leave it in the gym changing room never to be seen again.

Mrs Wad has now read this thread and I am in deep do-do. Says she wants a fridge AND a nice watch. My brother in law bought my sister a Patek I am told - he would not say how much he paid for it. He is an investment analyst and drives a big Mercedes - BUT he is fat and bald and works 16 hours a day.Lump - buy the nice watch so you can remember being young, single and in the money. Take a swatch to the gym!!

Panerai was/is considered quite original and no bling-bling.For those people complaining about the 3k investment; classic handmade watches don't really lose value. With a bit of luck the watch you buy now can be sold with profit in 10 years.
