A top article by Mick James on the late Troubleshooter Sir John Harvey-Jones. He was most certainly an industry great in my view. His charisma, leadership and objective business intellect were astonishing. We often get asked questions about what a consultant does by clients (and graduates as well!). These programmes give a real insight into a style of consulting in this industry. Whilst we must remember that the series is from another time (if we are lucky enough to be treated to a repeat), it is no less relevant today. In one programme he visits a golfing product manufacturer. How many consultants would have the confidence to face an entrepeneurial client and ask,'So how much are you to the bank?'Are we experienced enough, these days, when we become consultants, in the questions that we ask? and, Do enough Consultants really know when they should be asking a question? This was not an entrepeneur with a new idea and no business (like Dragons Den). The man he asked in this episode wasn't a billionaire entrepeneur (like Trump or Sugar). He was at that mid-point where it really is the toughest question to ask.and please, could anyone else look that great in a golf buggy? Once in it, he was off. If you have a moment you should at least read the article by Mick James. Well said Mr James, and well lived Sir John Harvey-Jones.
