Help pleaseMy best mate has just got a job with a small UK consultancy firm and needs to negotiate a salary ASAP. Can anyone advice on thisHis experienceHe is 35 and has had 10 years academic experience in environmental field. He also has a PhDFor the past year he has been working as a freelance management consultant doing corporate due diligence. The consultancyIt is a small 12 person consultancy doing thing like: thought leadership, brand and marketing strategy, growth strategy, executive insight, due diliigence etc There are three levels in the firm: Top- Directors, Middle- Consultant / project managers, Low- freelancers who do the ground research, interview, date gathering etcHis jobHe will be middle level -ie consultant / project manager. He will do things like: some sales to bring in projects, meet clients for briefings, project manage, research, analyse data, write up and present results and advise clients amongst other things across all the different consultancy fields. Also because of his experience he has been asked to train people in the firm to develop corporate due diligence and for him to also try and develop an environmental consulting arm in the firm.Basically with all his experience and his responsibility my three questions are1) What salary range should he try and get / expect2) What sort of perks e.g. holiday, bonus, pensions etc should he also try and get / expect3) Tips and hints for him to negotiate to his advantage Any advice at all will be gratefully appreciated and I am happy to give more information if necessary. Thanks everyoneB

Help please My best mate (Me) has just got a job with a small UK consultancy firm and needs to negotiate a salary ASAP. Can anyone advice on this His experience He is 35 and has had 10 years academic experience in environmental field. He also has a PhD (Has not worked since he was 25, or 1997)For the past year he has been working as a freelance management consultant doing corporate due diligence. (Dot the I cross the T type work)The consultancy It is a small 12 person consultancy doing thing like: thought leadership, brand and marketing strategy, growth strategy, executive insight, due diliigence etc (Lets assume that people still pay for 'Knowledge Management')There are three levels in the firm: Top- Directors, Middle- Consultant / project managers, Low- freelancers who do the ground research, interview, date gathering etc 5 Levels, 12 staff? So 2 directors, 2 Consultant PM's , 2 PM's, 6 Workers. His job He will be middle level -ie consultant / project manager. He will do things like: some sales to bring in projects, meet clients for briefings, project manage, research, analyse data, write up and present results and advise clients amongst other things across all the different consultancy fields. Also because of his experience he has been asked to train people in the firm to develop corporate due diligence and for him to also try and develop an environmental consulting arm in the firm. 'Try and develop' thats going to be the one thing that kills his next wage rise and any future wage aspirations.Green is a big thing this year (2008) but beware the 'FADS'Basically with all his (your) experience and his (your)responsibility my three questions are 1) What salary range should he try and get / expect , 55-632) What sort of perks e.g. holiday, bonus, pensions etc should he also try and get / expect Pensions are worth nothing, more so in 2008Holiday standard 4 weeks a yearBonus, well as he is responsible 100% for the 'Enviro Consult' arm lets talk shares, Bonus is a bad word unless you deal in Money.I would in fact aim for a 20% bonus split 10% company performance and 10% your performance.3) Tips and hints for him to negotiate to his advantage Results, all business is results based, thats all :)Any advice at all will be gratefully appreciated and I am happy to give more information if necessary. Thanks everyone B

Thanks masses taxman for your advice above- much appreciated. From your response thought I better clarify one thing. There are 12 people in the firm- ie top and middle level. 3 directors and 9 project managers /consultants. Other jobs are all outsourced to freelancers hence the reason the firm only has 12 people.Any more thoughts out there? And I am Education officer, which I do find very rewarding. This is honestly for my best mate.
