I think is great to work for an MBBB depending on what your goals are.To my suprise many people speak about top MBA then say MBBB, why not top MBA then start working for yoursel, establish a business or get some of your business school mates and do something.

I think that's a good question. 1 reason might be prestige. Some people probab;y think there's a prestige about working for mckinsey or one of these kinds of companies but i suspect rhe main reason is money. For most normal folks going to a top MBA programme entails about 100k of debt depending on how much savings they have. Thus, they have no capital to start a business and have the option of taking one which guarentees a decent salary, if they get in.

I agree with anal-ist.Though is a good point that is raised and one which people aiming for top MBAs have to question. Will going to a top MBA that requires 100k investment guaraantee and MBB career, maybe not.

Only a small number of top MBAs have the desire and ability to get into MBBB in the first place. Similarly only a small proportion of the population actually have the ability and desire to start a business. These are not necessarily the same people. On top of this is the risk element. Firstly, a start-up risks your own money. Secondly, it risks your career as you may find it hard to get back into employed role later. Thirdly you do not have the luxury of a diversifying your risks over many projects as a corporation or consultancy does.

If I were to start up my own business I think it would be better for me to invest the 100k in the business than waste it on an MBA. I think MBA is more suitable for people who aspire towards management careers in the big corporations/ consultancies but I do believe the management concepts taught in business schools and universities are simply not easily applied to small business/start-ups. If you think about it how can you apply concepts such as DCF valuation, which requires history of trading, to a start-up operation? Also, in addition to this the majority of lecturers who teach are academics who specialists in the study of management theories but may not have actually started and run their own businesses. Wouldn't it be better to learn from experience or get a mentor who has been there?I may be wrong on this issue so would appreciate hearing from others who fell otherwise.

Firstly DCF valuation is useful even for small businesses. It really clarifies where you are adding value by building future cash flows even when profit is low.Secondly many MBA lecturers in the top business schools (and the rest are a waste of money) do have business experience and started their own businesses. There are also many guest speakers from businesses. It is not like an undergrad degree. Finally if you are going to learn from experience I suggest you work for someone else's business rather than using your own money!
