Does anyone have experience of Gartner Consulting in the UK? What is the culture and work like? Also, what would be the likely joining package for an Associate Director?

Culture from what I have observed is very "old boys network", but mind you a very intelligent set of folks of the highest calibre... Don't let this excite you. It's not a place that is known for progression or pay rises. This is due to Gartner's focus on selling higher margin research. Equivalent to a software vendor focussing on selling software rather than support.

Which branch of consulting? Consulting to the technology firms (ie, marketing strategy to Microsoft, IBM, etc.) typically pays lower than consulting to IT departments in other industries (ie, application strategies, etc. to Northrup Grumman, etc.). Negotiate as well as you can to start out with, because pay rises are very slow on the inside. Quality of life is not bad. Metrics are very, very clear and well reported and can be managed to meet your goals. The Gartner name buys solid entry into senior-level IT roles or marketing within the tech sector, depending on the branch of consulting.
